LONDON'S GREAT BRIDGES: LIGHTING THE THAMES

Sam was featured in the CHANNEL 4 documentary LONDON’S GREAT BRIDGES: LIGHTING THE THAMES, speaking about his involvement in the Illuminated River project and the processes behind his piece - In Motion.

Sam’s interview can be found in Episode 3 of the series, found on Channel 4’s streaming service All 4 here

ILLUMINATED RIVER

Illuminated River is an ambitious public art commission that seeks to light up the 15 bridges on London’s River Thames. Once complete, it will be the longest public art project in the world, seen over 130 million times each year during its 10 year lifespan.

Sam was shortlisted by a panel of Illuminated River trustees and light artist Leo Villareal (Bay Lights, San Fransisco) to compose new pieces of music inspired by Cannon Street Rail Bridge and Blackfriars footbridge.

Guildhall School

Sam has a continuing relationship with the Guildhall School of Music & Drama marketing department, having created bespoke compositions for a selection of the school’s promotional films.

MUSICITY x CULTURE MILE

As part of the EMS Collective, Sam was one of the ten artists commissioned to create a piece of new music in response to a building, area or aspect of the City of London that inspired them. The Collective’s contribution - ETERNAL DESCENT - is inspired by Smithfield Rotunda Garden and uses sound mapping data gathered by acoustic experts ARUP to explore the intrinsic connection between architecture and sound.

All ten of the new tracks have been geo-targeted to the areas they were written in response to, so visitors can truly connect with the music in the places and spaces that inspired them.

Barbican Presents...

In association with the Barbican Centre, Sam co-composed the soundtrack to the 1925 American silent film adaption of Phantom of the Opera, directed by Rupert Julian. The project ended with a live performance of the score, alongside the original film, in Barbican Cinema 1.

Sam returned to the Silent Film series for a second year, composing the soundtrack to Yasuji Murata’s 1929 animation Taro’s Train. The project culminated in a live performance with percussion and piano ensemble in Barbican Cinema 1. Live Benshi narration by Tomoko Komura.

In 2021, Sam returned to provide Sound Projection for Britain on the Move, a live-film score event featuring fascinating footage of 1950s Britain, accompanied by hybrid electronic and orchestral music.
