In association with the Barbican Centre, Sam co-composed the soundtrack to the 1925 American silent film adaption of Phantom of the Opera, directed by Rupert Julian. The project ended with a live performance of the score, alongside the original film, in Barbican Cinema 1.
Sam returned to the Silent Film series for a second year, composing the soundtrack to Yasuji Murata’s 1929 animation Taro’s Train. The project culminated in a live performance with percussion and piano ensemble in Barbican Cinema 1. Live Benshi narration by Tomoko Komura.
In 2021, Sam returned to provide Sound Projection for Britain on the Move, a live-film score event featuring fascinating footage of 1950s Britain, accompanied by hybrid electronic and orchestral music.
